20 Musicians Who Have Joined The 27 Club

All of these people have one thing in common; they will never celebrate their 28th birthday. But what does vary (even though some may argue there is a pattern), is their official cause of death. Some died from an overdose, some from drugs and others from alcohol abuse. There have been murders and disappearances. Below is a list of some of the members of The 27 Club.

1. Fredo Santana

Fredo was an American rapper. He had several health issues including drug addiction, epilepsy and in 2017 he was diagnosed with live and kidney failure. He was found by his girlfriend on January 19th, 2018. His cause of death was a fatal seizure.

Kristen was the bass player for Hole and Janitor Joe, also singing back up. Her friend found her dead in her apartment on June 16th, 1994- heroin overdose.

3. Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse was renowned for her soulful voice but she also had many problems including drugs and alcohol. Her body was discovered on July 23rd 2011 after she had overdosed on alcohol. Her blood alcohol level was .416, approximately 5 times over the legal limit.

It was 1960 and Jessie Belvin was playing in the first ever concert in front of an integrated audience. Plenty of abuse was shouted from white members of the audience and the show had to be stopped twice. While driving home there was a car crash and Jessie, his wife and the two other passengers died. Jessie had received death threats so it is suspected that his tires had been slashed.

Brian Jones’ drug habits started when Keith Richards and Mick Jagger’s fame began to out shine his- who was one of the original founders of The Rolling Stones! His was asked to leave the group because of his habit. On July 3rd 1969, not a month after his dismissal, he was found at the bottom of his pool. ‘Death by misadventure’ was the official cause of death.

Kurt Cobain was the front man of the band Nirvana. He is said to have been one of the most influential musicians for generation X, particularly in the birth of grunge. His body was found on the 8th April 1994 but the coroner estimates his death to have been 3 days before. The cause was suicide by gunshot but Cobain had struggled with drugs and depression for years.

The Korean pop singer of the boy band SHINee committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning after burning coal in a studio. He was taken to hospital but died before he arrived. Newspapers began to highlight the stress Korean pop stars were facing after Kim’s death.

Although dabbling in music, Jean-Michel was more famous for his artwork. His friends believed using heroine was Jean Michel’s way of coping with fame. He lived in an area flooded with drug addicts and even though he tried to kick the habit, he was found on August 12th 1988, surrounded by vomit and several syringes.

Co founder of the band Canned Heat and pioneer of Blues rock music, Alan Wilson was another who fell victim to a drug overdose on September 3rd, 1970 in California. He had previously attempted suicide by driving his car off a road.

On July 3rd, 1971 Morrison died in a bathtub of a heroine overdose. The unofficial version is that he took some of his girlfriend’s heroine thinking it was cocaine. His cause of death was accidental ingestion.

In 1938, in Greenwood, Mississippi Robert Johnson, a Blues singer and musician, was sipping his whiskey which some say was poisoned with strychnine. Strychnine was a very common choice for assassins so some believe he was murdered. He died on August 16th.

May 25th, 2003 saw the death of another 27 year old due to a heroine overdose. Jeremy was a sound manipulator and vocal operator for The Mars Volta.

Jimi was famous for his skills on the electric guitar. His career came to an end after only four years when he was found dead on September 18th, 1970 due to asphyxiating on his own vomit. He had overdosed on barbiturates, taking 9 prescribed sleeping pills.

Welsh born singer and songwriter, Ham was also a talented guitarist and pianist. He was a member of the band Badfinger. Unfortunately the band suffered huge financial problems, which drove Ham to his suicide. He hanged himself in a garage on April 24th three days before his 28th birthday. He left behind his pregnant girlfriend.

A tragic story, Mia, the lead singer of the band The Gits, was on her way home when she was attacked, raped and killed on a street in Seattle. Her murder wasn’t solved until 10 years later and her killer sentenced to 36 years in prison, where he remains!

16. Janis Joplin

Janis Joplin was the lead singer of the acid rock band, Big Brother and the Holding Company and a solo artist. She died on October 4th, 1970. Her death was caused by a lethal mixture of a powerful heroin, (which had resulted in other people’s overdoses) and alcohol. She died at home in Hollywood.

Linda Jones’ career started by singing in her family’s gospel group, at the age of just 6! Her albums were a combination of soul and R&B. Jones suffered from diabetes. On March 14th, 1972, while resting between shows at the Apollo Theater she slipped into a coma and later died at her mom’s home.

Fat Pat was a member of the rap band ‘Screwed Up Click’ along with his brother (Big Hawk) and his friend (DJ Screw). In 1998 he was shot dead in Houston outside the apartment of his promoter.

Richey Edwards wrote songs and played the guitar for the Manic Street Preachers before he went missing on February 1st 1995. Rumors spread that he had staged his own disappearance. Edwards has never been found despite various sightings. He death was declared legal on November 23d 2008.

Sean performed in the band Ink & Dagger during the 90’s. They claimed to be vampires and were very much associated with Gothic underground movement. The fame may have been because of their behavior rather than the success of their music. Either way, Sean died on August 28th 2000 from asphyxiation after choking on his own vomit.
